Camp Lejeune Water Contamination

Law firms are scrambling to sign up former US Marine Corps veterans and others who lived at Camp Lejeune from 1953 to 1987. But, why?

The US Navy exposed military personnel, contractors, and civilians living at Camp Lejeune between 1953 and 1987 to toxic chemicals in the local water supply. The US Navy and the Department of Defense reportedly knew about the dangerous situation. Yet they did nothing. Victims may have the right to sue the government and demand compensation for resulting health issues.

Plaintiffs in previous lawsuits against the US Navy presented evidence of the contaminated water supply at Camp Lejeune. They also argued the Navy knew the water was filled with toxic levels of trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), and other chemicals.

Thus, the Department of Defense knew the water was unsuitable for human consumption. Yet, they did nothing. Thus, putting millions of lives at risk.

There have been reports of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other forms of cancer.

Members Of Congress Step Up To Help Camp Lejeune Victims

Camp Lejeune Water ContaminationIn 2016, over 800 plaintiffs filed suit against the Navy alleging Camp Lejeune water contamination gave them cancer.

A federal judge consolidated the suits into a single Multi-District Litigation case. The federal court eventually ruled that the claims were barred under North Carolina’s 10-year statute of repose.

However, in 2021, members of Congress introduced the Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA). In 2022, congress consolidated CLJA into another bill. The Honoring Our Pact Act addresses remedies for veterans who have been exposed to toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune.

On August 2, 2022, the Senate voted 86-11 to approve the Honoring Our PACT Act. President Biden signed the bill into law three days later. Victims will now have the right to file a water contamination lawsuit against the government and seek compensation.

Congress has set the total settlement at $6.7 billion. However, individual settlements may range from over $1 million to as little as $25,000. Individuals can file a claim to receive a claim between $25,000 and $1 million or more depending on the severity of their illness.
